Bedworth,
George Eliot
country is situated about five miles north of the
centre of Coventry and three miles south of Nuneaton. An excellent link to the
M6
exists with the
Coventry canal
running through the town. The roots of Bedworth
are very old, a reference to the town with a date of 1086, having been found in
the Doomsday book.
The development of Bedworth started during the 18th and 19th
century following the arrival of coal mining and the overspill of the ribbon
weaving and textile industries from Coventry. Until quite recently Bedworth
was primarily a coal mining town, the last
colliery was closed in 1994.
The most historically
imposing buildings still in evidence are the
Nicholas
Chamberlain Almshouses in All
Saint’s Square in the town centre. Instead
of being an Urban District Council in its own right, Bedworth has been joined
since 1974, with the larger neighbouring market town of Nuneaton to form a
District Borough Council.
